The phrase "Pale Blue Dot" gained its prominence through the eloquent words of renowned astrophysicist and science communicator, Carl Sagan. In 1994, Sagan published a book titled "Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space." The title itself encapsulates the essence of the concept, referring to Earth as a minuscule, pale blue dot in the vastness of the cosmos.
The inspiration for this evocative phrase came from an image captured by NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft. On February 14, 1990, at a distance of about 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles) from Earth, Voyager 1 turned its camera back towards our planet. The resulting image showed Earth as a tiny, faint speck suspended in a sunbeam, surrounded by the vast emptiness of space. This image became one of the most iconic and humbling photographs ever taken, illustrating the fragility and uniqueness of our home in the cosmos.
This triptych, designed for the "Overview" exhibition in 2022, represents the Earth from three viewpoints: its orbit, the Moon and Mars. The last painting represents the Earth as a vanishing blue dot and, I hope, makes us take a step back from our day-to-day.
